Lucy Buchanan - Is the Shipwrecked Star Racist?

lucy buchanan Written by Kelly England

Channel 4 - Shipwrecked

The one time model and Gap Year student, Lucy Buchanan has caused a stir on the Channel 4 programme 'Shipwrecked'. Male fans my be disappointed that she did not cause a stir for appearing nude but for voicing some controversial views... Her apparently 'racist' comments have led to a string of complaints to Ofcom. This could not have come at a worse time for Channel 4 who is currently in the middle of the Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo Omera vs. Shilpa Shetty race row.

Lucy Buchanan from Edinburgh has been reported to say to her Shipwrecked team mates, "When I look out at what Britain is, it's just a complete mess." I would argue that this statement is not 'racist'. However it gets worse, "I don't appreciate how people come and take over our country. Britain's really not Britain anymore." And then she really drops herself in it…"I don't like fat people, I don't really like really ugly people, I don't like it when foreigners come into this country and they don't take on British culture and British values."

The final nail in the head for any defence on our part is "I'm for the British Empire and things. I'm for slavery, but that's never going to come back."

lucy buchananHmm, so what can we say about that other than that of course it is wrong? I have to hope that the ignorance of the young girl on Channel 4's Shipwreckedis quickly taught to not continue with this attitude, and worse still, make it appear 'cool'.

However, it makes me wonder if Lucy Buchanan is the only young person in this country to think like this? Children are fortunately or unfortunately the product of their parents - just look at Jade Goody if you have any doubts on that matter! And also, how come it is acceptable to criticise 'fat people and ugly people' without a trace of criticism? In the Big Brother house the c*** word was said and drew no absolutely attention compared to the subject of racism. As a women, I find this word very offensive and I don't think people should be saying such words on TV as it can encourage children to repeat it when the show is finished. What do you think?

So, is it the job of Channel 4 to blot out people such as Jade Goody and Lucy Buchanan so as to spare our fair ears and eyes from their influences? Or, are they simply providing a medium for us to see Modern Britain in the comfort of our own homes - without seeing it's unpleasantness at the bus stop, around the supermarket or in our schools. Reality TV is supposed to be 'real' after all - and according to viewing ratings we officially love it?

Tell us what you think below. Is Lucy Buchanan on or off Channel 4's Shipwrecked 'racist', 'ignorant' or is it only fair that she should express her opinions?

She can live to 150 I’ll never forgive that girl for what she said because of her i built up small empire of face-book and social media to remind everyone if she ever get famous what her real thoughts are regarding about 50-65% of uk who either so called ugly ,fat ,gay or black i’m not crazy but people like lucy would normal slip into top job somewhere with their views and act on them making situation first wouldn’t be surprised if she taken job at BNP

I see a racists being called out but I wonder Kelly England, thats like me saying;

White people are immoral, corrupted, nasty people...

Now tell me was that racists?
Was that unacepptable?

Im seeing some comments here that are obviously made by white people with little or no interaction with people of other races...

Was that racist?
Was that right?

Think about it
YES

what ever happened to having your own opinion? We should be allowed to say what ever we like, if you cant handle it grow thicker skin. She was only saying what she thinks, and im sure if channel 4 thought it was so harsh they wouldnt of shown it in the first place.!!! Im not saying i agree with her, but i do believe in freedom of speech, and i think that society has a lot to answer for if we cant even have that anymore!
